Week 7 N ~ Nest {10/17 - 10/21/2011}
This week we learned about the Letter N, Nests, and the Number 5. I can't believe we are in week 7 already, it is going by so fast. The girls are really enjoying it. Most days we do not do school until the afternoon when Cole is napping and usually they are bugging me all morning asking me when we are going to do it. Just this week when we were downstairs doing school, Hayley looked at me and said, "I really like doing school". Priceless.
This week we learned about Nests (mostly bird nests) and how birds make their nests. We also looked at a bunch of pictures of nests online and we watched a video of birds hatching which was really cool. Last year we had watched the live video of the baby eagles and we went back and checked it out and we were able to see both the mom and the dad but all the babies had flown the coup.
We memorized Psalm 116:6, "The Lord protects the simplehearted" and relayed that to how Parent Birdies protect their eggs in their Nests and provide food and warmth for them, so God protects us and watches out for us as well.

Week 6 A ~ Apple {10/10 - 10/14/2011}
This week we learned about the Letter A, Apples, and the Number 4. This was a fun week! We unfortunately did have the opportunity to go pick our own apples, but we did go to the store and buy several different kinds of apples.
We did a taste test of all the different ones, and every ones favorite the ones we had bought were the Michigan Honeycrisps. Then the girls helped me peel a bunch of the apples and we made an Apple Crisp one day and another day we made Apple Sauce.
We memorized John 15:5 this week, "I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." We studied how last week Jesus was like the tree and we needed to stay connected to Him to have life, and this week continued the same idea except that we need to stay connected so we can bear fruit too, and the girls pretty much had remembered the scripture verse they learned last year on the Fruits of the Spirit.
Our Library Books:
We did a craft of making an Apple shaker. We painted paper plates, and stapled them together with some beans inside to represent the seeds.
Someone else really enjoyed this Lesson too:
Week 5 L ~ Leaf {10/3 - 10/7/2011}
This week we studied the Letter L, Leaf and the #3. Our usual day starts with what I call Circle Time. We sing and dance with motions to different songs (Hokey Pokey, He's got the Whole World in His Hands, and some other great kids songs I have found for helping kids with their fine motor skills) We then do the Pledge of Allegiance which the girls have already memorized and then we do our Calendar and Weather Charts. We talk about what day Today is, what Yesterday was, and what Tomorrow will be and we change the date on the calendar to a different color. We then talk about what the weather is like and change our weather chart to reflect that. After that, we usually start with our lesson assignments for the day.
For the Lesson on Leaves we went outside and collected a whole bunch of different shape leaves. We made a leaf book by tracing the leaves and coloring them in. We learned how leaves change colors, and we even laminated some leaves.
Our Biblical Concept this week was 'I will live and grow in Jesus", so we memorized 1 John 5:12 "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. " We did a visual of this of going out and looking at the leaves on the trees and how they were healthy and alive when they were connected to the tree. Then we took two leaves off the tree and brought them inside and watched how they slowly started to die as they were not connected to the tree anymore.

Week 4 M ~ Moon {9/26 - 9/30/2011}
This week we studied M and we learned about the Moon. We did our usual worksheets that help us learn about the letter M and the M sound as well as practice writing them. We also learned about the #2.
In learning about the moon we learned that the moon doesn't have any light of it's own and that if just reflects the Sun's light. The Sun gives light to the moon, so the moon can be a light to the world. We continued on with the same scripture verse from last week, just to reinforce it, and in this context we talked about Jesus being the Sun, then we are like the Moon and we need to reflect Jesus' light to others. One way we visualized this is we went into the dark bathroom (again! It is the only room with no windows!!) and I shined the flashlight into the mirror and it reflected the light onto the girls. So the flashlight was the Sun, the Mirror was the Moon and it reflected the Sun's light onto us.
We also studied the different phases of the moon: full, half, crescent and new and drew pictures of them.
This week I also had a "day off" and Daddy was my substitute teacher. The girls were so excited that Daddy was going to do school with them. One of the activities that Daddy helped supervise was to make a mobile of the Sun, Moon and Stars.
Our Library books for the week:
Week 3 S ~ Sun {9/19 - 9/23/2011}
This week we are studying the Letter S and Sun. We practiced our handwriting of the Letter S as well as learning how the "s" sound goes and what other words start with that sound.
As for learning about the Sun we learned about what the sun is made of, and also how the Earth rotates around the Sun. We made a Sun Dial that we put outside on the table so we could see how the Earth was moving and the shadow was changing. We also did an activity in our bathroom. I took a globe and flashlight in there, and we watched how daytime and nighttime were different on the different parts of the globe.
We also learned how BIG the sun really is. The sun is 109 times larger than the Earth in diameter. To help visualize this, we put one penny to represent the Earth and then we counted out 109 to represent the Sun.
Our Biblical Principal this week was that Jesus is like the Sun. We memorized John 8:12 Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Weeks 1 and 2 Creation {9/6 - 9/16/2011}
Our first two weeks of school focused on studying the Creation Story. Everyday we studied one of the days of Creation and what God created that day. They would then draw a picture of what God created.
It was a very easy intro into school and I liked it a lot. I like how every week with this curriculum they add something, so it isn't so overwhelming all at once.
Here are some of the books that we checked out from the library for our Creation Weeks!

Our New School Room
Last year we did school at our kitchen table, and it really didn't work for me, not having an assigned area where we did it, where things could be left out and have some sort of organization to it.
Over the summer, Daddy with the help of Grandpa did a lot of work in our basement so we could have a school room. They laid carpet, did lighting, moved furniture around and we also got new glass block windows. It really looks like a different place and me and the girls love it!!!
2011 - 2012 Curriculum
For the 2011 - 2012 School Year we will be doing My Father's World Kindergarten Curriculum with Hayley. Alyssa will participate with some of it, and then I will supplement her with other workbooks, etc.
These are of the girls, opening the box of curriculum when it arrived... they were beyond excited!!!
You can read more about what the curriculum is all about here: http://www.mfwbooks.com/products/M50/20/0/0/1
